Get to Know the 50 States (Maine)

Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by and welcome to Get to Know the 50 States. Last week's marathon was a bit of a bust. I was only able to get three of the four in that I had planned to. Regardless, we sure earned some frequent flyer miles last week.

Before we get started I wanted to turn your attention to a new member here at TSN. If I ever do a Get to Know Spain, I'll be sure to have him involved. Go check out the blog of Pepe Suave, the King Prawn from the Muppet movies. I guarantee a laugh.

Now, on we go with the next stop on the tour......

MAINE

Capital: Augusta

Admitted: March 15, 1820

Order: 23rd State

Nickname: Pine Tree State

Historical (fun) Facts:

- Eastport is the most eastern city in the United States. The city is considered the first place in the United States to receive the rays of the morning sun.

- Maine is the only state in the United States whose name has one syllable.

- Maine is the only state that shares its border with only one other state.

- Maine produces 99% of all the blueberries in the country

- Acadia National Park is the second most visited national park in the United States.

- 90% of the country's toothpick supply is produced in Maine.

- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was considered the most influential poet of his day. The writer was born in Portland, on February 2, 1807. His most popular works include "The Courtship of Miles Standish", "Evangeline" and "Hiawatha".

- York became the nation's first incorporated city in 1642.

Famous People from Maine

Kevin Eastman- Co-creator of the TMNT (THANKS!)

Jonathan Frakes- Make it so Number 1!

Judd Nelson- Breakfast Club alum

Matt Stairs- What team hasn't he played for?

Rachel Nichols- She is Scarlett in the upcoming G.I. Joe movie.

Wanna see more of her? Yeah I thought so.

Anna Belknap- From CSI: NY

The Sports

This is a short list. There are a few Minor League franchises in Maine and a few colleges but there are no pro teams.

The Portland Sea Dogs are a Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.

The Portland Pirates are an American Hockey League team affiliated with the Buffalo Sabres.

The Lewiston MAINEiacs are a junior hockey team in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and are the only team form America in the league.

That's it for semi-pro teams. Throw in a few colleges and you can see why the majority of people in Maine most likely support Boston teams. But I wouldn't know because I didn't hear from any TSN members from Maine.

Oh well, that's all for this week. Tune in next week when we take a look at the 24th state on the list....next Wednesday we visit Missouri.

  1. I went White Water Rafting in Northern most Maine once, and the guide was a wonderful young lady from Maine. She told us about growing up there and playing with "Bug Kites." Seems she'd catch these outrageously sized horseflies, tie a string on them and play with them. Now, who wouldn't think THAT was fun?

Also, the Jameson Tavern, across from the LL Bean flagship store in Freeport, is where the treaty creating the state out of Massachusetts territory was signed. I had a Thanksgiving "lunch" there once - an open faced Hot turkey sandwich. :) Can get a really nice beer battered fish there and with a cold one, there's not much better....
